Important Voter Registration Reminder for Young Adults

Recent data from the 2019 General Election highlights a concerning trend: only 47% of 18-24 year-olds participated in the electoral process, leaving a significant portion of young people—4.3 million, to be exact—missing from the voter rolls. To put this into perspective, that's equivalent to the population of the UK's second-largest city.

A 2023 Electoral Commission report estimated that up to eight million people were missing from the electoral register in the UK and that millions more were not registered accurately.

In response, Hogan Lovells has crafted a comprehensive Handbook covering vital aspects of voter registration, eligibility criteria for UK parliamentary general elections, various voting methods, and voter ID requirements.

Research underscores the significant impact companies can have on voter turnout through corporate voter engagement initiatives. The Handbook, designed to be widely distributed among diverse employers across various industries, aims to empower individuals with the knowledge to participate in the electoral process effectively.

The Handbook covers voter registration, who can vote in UK parliamentary general elections, the different methods of voting and voter ID requirements. Evidence shows that companies that carry out corporate voter engagement can make a meaningful impact on voter turnout and we hope the Handbook can be distributed widely by a range of employers of different types and operating across different industries.
